Every Saturday 10am - Noon http://www.fwnaturecenter.org From the Private Collections of Texas: European Art, Ancient to Modern Kimbell Art Museum November 22, 2009- March 21, 2010 The Kimbell plays host to 100 of the most important European paintings and sculptures ever held in private collections in Texas. Most of them are works normally hidden from public view, ranging from glorious Impressionist paintings that once decorated ranchers' homes in West Texas to gems of Renaissance and Baroque art owned by the great collectors of Dallas and Houston. Since first coming into wealth on a national scale in the 1920s, Texans have continued to assert a record of art collecting of the highest discernment. Over 40 collectors will be represented, and among the artists to be featured are Guercino, Rembrandt, Gainsborough, Monet, Renoir, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso, and Mondrian. From the Private Collectios of Texas Kimbell Art Museum November 22, 2009- March 21, 2010 From the Private Collections of Texas: European Art, Ancient to Modern November 22, 2009–March 21, 2010 The Kimbell Art Museum is organizing an exhibition of major paintings and sculptures bought by Texans for their private collections between 1900 and the present. The exhibition will focus exclusively on the art of Europe and the ancient Mediterranean from about 700 B.C. to the 1950s, with approximately 90 works. Featured artists will include Rembrandt, Guido Reni, Angelica Kauffman, Monet, Caillebotte, Cézanne, Picasso, Magritte, and Max Ernst. Since the first decade of the 20th century, when wealth in Texas began to reach a national scale, private individuals have collected works from the art of the American West to contemporary academic painting from America and Europe. By the time of the oil boom in the 1920s, a pattern of discerning collecting was established that emphasized European art from antiquity to the modern masters. Kimbell Gets Bonington Kimbell Art Museum December 11, 2009- December 31, 2011 An oil sketch of Venice by the 19th-century British artist Richard Parkes Bonington was acquired by the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Eric M. Lee, its director, announced this week. Oil sketches by Bonington are rare and only a handful of American museums have any. “Even though he is not very well known, he was one of the towering figures of 19th-century landscape painting,” Mr. Lee said. He explained that works by Bonington, whom he described as “a quintessential romantic artist,” were hard to come by because the artist died when he was only 25. The Kimbell work is a quick plein air scene of what the artist saw one day in 1826 along the Grand Canal. The painting will go on view on Friday, next to two other views of Venice, one by Canaletto and another by Guardi. The Kimbell Art Museum acquired the painting in May 2009. The work is executed in egg tempera and oil on a wooden panel and is one of only four known easel paintings generally believed to come from his hand. The others are the Doni Tondo in Florence’s Uffizi Gallery and two unfinished paintings, The Manchester Madonna and The Entombment, both housed in the National Gallery, London.
