    Alice Neel: Painted Truths Part of "An American Season" On view through June 13, 2010 At the Caroline Wiess Law Building One of the greatest American painters of the 20th century, Alice Neel (1900-1984) is best known for her psychologically acute portraits. Having consciously set out to chronicle the zeitgeist of her time, Neel painted friends and family, as well as the celebrated artists and writers of her day, such as Andy Warhol, Frank O´Hara, and Meyer Shapiro.
  • CHALLENGE GALLERY
    The Health Museum
    January 1, 2010- September 30, 2011

    CHALLENGE GALLERY , located next to the Amazing Body Pavilion's exit, dares visitors to perform at the top of their game, test their reflexes, master the wacky wire, flex their mental muscles and dance their hearts out. At each of the exhibit's six stations, visitors must use a specific muscle to complete the activity. Activities include Mindball, where the most relaxed player wins by pushing a ball toward their opponent using calm brain waves.

    Another activity in the Challenge area is the Dance Challenge. Players have a chance to show off their best dance moves as they test their muscle memory by stepping on lighted panels and following along with the on-screen performer. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Experience the thrill of historic aviation in four legendary aircraft from the World War II era. The Lone Star Flight Museum is now offering bomber and trainer flight experiences in its B-17 Flying Fortress, B-25 Mitchell, T-6 Texan and PT-17 Stearman.

  • Forgotten Gateway: Coming to America through Galveston Island
    Moody Gardens

    – Moody Gardens recently announced the opening of Forgotten Gateway: Coming to America through Galveston Island .The exhibit chronicles the Port of Galveston’s largely forgotten history as a major gateway to American immigration from 1845 to 1924. Forgotten Gateway builds on a growing scholarly and public interest in the history of migration patterns to America and Galveston’s place as one of the nation’s top immigrant ports in that history.

    “This exhibit is the first of its kind to explore Galveston’s legacy as a port of entry on a national scale,” said John Zendt, Moody Gardens general manager. “We are very excited to have it here on the island and bring to light the little-known yet rich era of Galveston’s history and just how important it was to the growth of Texas and the American Midwest.”

    Located on Galveston Island's west end, has resumed activities post Hurricane Ike. Though the south side of the park (beach side) remains closed, the park's north side (just past 13 Mile Road on FM 3005), is open with a Welcome Center, and a host of scheduled activities throughout the spring.

    Experience science in 4D at Houston’s first and only 4D theater, the McGovern 4D Theater. Enjoy a 3D feature in a fully digital, surround sound environment with special effects like rain, lightning, scents and more! The theater opened in September 2008 and features 4D films developed by the Museum's staff, as well as special engagement presentations. Graciously underwritten by the John P. McGovern Foundation.

    On view February 14 - May 9, 2010 At the Audrey Jones Beck Building This exhibition brings together for the first time the unparalleled bodies of work that American Impressionist Maurice Prendergast (1858—1924) produced during two trips to Italy, in 1898 and 1911.

    Sargent and the Sea On view February 14 - May 23, 2010 At the Audrey Jones Beck Building American expatriate artist John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) is best known for his glamorous society portraits, and much of his art has been well-documented in exhibitions and publications. This exhibition is the first to examine the little-explored maritime paintings and drawings that Sargent produced in various locales during the first five years of his career.
