Why not explore Austin's Underground?

At least 2 major caverns are within a short drive from Austin in an area hone combed with limestone caves. The Balcones Fault, stretching along IH 35 between Austin and San Antonio, marks the barrier between rich farmland to the east and rugged limestone hills to the west. Vast neworks of open spaces lie beneath these hills.

Each cave offers an amazing variety of beautiful speleothems (rock formations), fossils, and history. Two to visit are:

  • Inner Cavern: (Georgetown), was discovered in 1963 during construction of I-35. Entrance is by cable car. The guided tours feature displays of prehistoric relics. Sound and light effects enhance the caves atmosphere. Info. and fees (512 931 2283).
  • Wonder Cave: (San Marcos) One of the largest earthquake formed caves in the U.S. A one hour 45 minute guided tour includes the cave, an observation tower, an antigravity house, and a train ride through a wildlife park. Info and fees, (512 392 3760).
