WELCOME TO THE SID RICHARDSON MUSEUM Where the West Rides Again
One of the finest and most focused collections of Western art in America, the Museum features paintings of the Old West by Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell and other artists. The works, reflecting both the art and reality of the American West, are from the collection of legendary Texas oilman and philanthropist, Sid W. Richardson (1891-1959). Since opening in 1982, the Museum has been one of Historic Sundance Square’s top attractions, drawing more than 50,000 visitors a year from all over the world.

Our educator events are designed to enhance your appreciation of the Sid Richardson Museum art collection and to encourage creative use of resources.
Educator events and teacher professional development services are based on an inquiry based approach. Experiences may include interactive discussion response to art, investigating lessons, artist demos, keynote speakers, exploring relevant technology links and innovative hands-on activities to support interdisciplinary connections or your specific interests.

Guided Tours
Docent guided tours are available for groups of up to 50 people, and last approximately one hour. Requests for a Guided Tour must be placed at least three weeks in advance so that a tour can be tailored for your group.
School tours may be designed to complement classroom curriculum. For school tour information and guidelines on how to prepare students for a museum visit, please review Tour Information and Guidelines.
Self-Guided Tours

The Heard-Craig Center for the Arts hosts the Art History Brown Bag series on the first Wednesday of each month from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. in the Heard-Craig Carriage House at 205 ½ W. Hunt Street in McKinney. There is no charge to attend the series. Whether you’re an art historian or just enjoy a beautiful painting, the Heard-Craig Art History series will heighten your appreciation of art and provide insight into the mind of the artist. Join us for an exploration of the “isms” including cubism, romanticism, dadaism, impressionism, expressionism and more. The lectures are presented by Annie Royer who has been a studio and decorative painter/muralist for 16 years. Ms. Royer has a fine arts degree from Austin College; and has earned three Master’s Degrees from Yale University in Religion and the Visual Arts, East Asian Studies and the history of art.

Glenn Ligon: AMERICA is the first comprehensive, mid-career retrospective of Glenn Ligon (b. 1960), widely regarded as one of the most important and influential American artists to have emerged in the past two decades. Organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art and curator Scott Rothkopf, in close collaboration with the artist, the exhibition surveys 25 years of Ligon's work, from his student days until the present. The exhibition features roughly 100 works, including paintings, prints, photography, drawings, and sculptural installations, as well as the artist's recent, striking neon reliefs. The retrospective also debuts previously unexhibited early works, which shed light on Ligon's artistic origins, and for the first time reconstitutes major series within his work, such as the seminal Door paintings that launched his career
