The Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig Museum and Education Center is located on Galveston Island, Texas, less than an hour from downtown Houston, the world's petroleum capital.
Visitors board the retired jackup drilling rig and view a video about the offshore industry. The museum features three floors of models and interactive displays illustrating the story of offshore oil and gas from seismic technology to exploration and production. Scale models of production platforms, actual drill bits and remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs) as well as videos and exhibits explain drilling, geology, seismic, well servicing and production.
Following a leisurely tour inside the museum, visitors can take the skywalk out onto the drill floor of the rig, or visit the exhibits on the pipe deck from the first floor of the museum.

Flight Experiences
Tue, 2011-11-08 - Mon, 2012-12-31
Tue, 2011-11-08 - Mon, 2012-12-31
Experience the thrill of historic aviation in four legendary aircraft from the World War II era. The Lone Star Flight Museum is now offering bomber and trainer flight experiences in its B-17 Flying Fortress, B-25 Mitchell, T-6 Texan and PT-17 Stearman.
The B-17 Flying Fortress was an Army Air Corps heavy-duty bomber from World War II. These four-engine aircraft flew strategic bombing missions over Europe armed with .50 caliber machine guns and five thousand pounds of bombs. 13,000 B-17’s were produced over the course of the war, of which only 13 still are airworthy today. The Flight Museum’s B-17 is painted in the colors of ‘Thunderbird’, an aircraft with the 303rd bomb group which flew 116 missions during World War II.
The B-25 Mitchell was a very versatile medium-duty bomber which flew in both the Pacific and European Theaters during World War II. The Flight Museum B-25 is the official aircraft of the Doolittle Raiders. It honors the 80 brave men who flew 16 land-based B-25s off the USS Hornet in the first raid against the Japanese on their own soil.
Once a pilot completed the basics in the Stearman, he could move on to fighter pilot training in the T-6 Texan. This aircraft was known as ‘the pilot maker’ because of its popularity as an advanced trainer for the US military and other air forces world-wide. Pilots completed the last 75 hours of their flight training in the T-6 and would then move directly into flying a single engine fighter such as the P-47 Thunderbolt or F6F Hellcat. The Flight Museum’s T-6 is an SNJ-5, the Navy variant of the trainer.
Most pilots, regardless of which branch of the military they flew for during World War II, learned the basics of flight in the front seat of a PT-17 Stearman. Their instructors provided guidance and demonstration from the back seat and could take the controls when necessary. The acrobatic abilities of the Stearman also allowed pilots to learn combat maneuvers for dog fighting, such as controlled dives and rolls.

CUM YAH GULLAH -Inspiring Songs. Candid Folktales. African Heritage Preserved

Inspiring Songs. Candid Folktales. African Heritage Preserved.
Children’s Museum of Houston revives a piece of American culture through its retelling of the story of the Gullah
Exhibit debuts February 25 in celebration of Black History Month
Buried deep within the American tale lies the story of the Gullah. A vivid and fertile culture where the sounds of Michael Row the Boat Ashore flows through the salty air and clever little Br’er Rabbit taught the world brains are as good as might. The roots of these mysterious, pleasant pieces of folklore can be traced back in time to a place where traditions thrived, family flourished in a unique new setting and hardships transformed into strengths of community.
Gullah is a West African culture that survived the hardships of slavery and remained almost unscathed until the 1950’s when the Sea Islands were connected to mainstream America through bridges. Now, the Children’s Museum of Houston is reviving the arts and practices of the Gullah people in a reinvented, powerful new exhibit, titled Cum Yah Gullah, opening February 25, 2012 through September 8, 2013. The exhibit aims to preserve and provide cultural understanding of Gullah traditions, explore the geography and ecosystems of the Sea Islands and develop an appreciation for one’s own culture and background.

Another popular water attraction is our wave pool, which is open to residents and visitors during the summer months. We’re also proud to be home of the only beach in Harris County: Sylvan Beach Park, with 2,000 linear feet of beautiful sandy beaches.

Also nearby are several parks and nature sanctuaries that bring hundreds of visitors each month for bird-watching and photography.
HISTORY
With our close proximity to the San Jacinto Monument and the Battleship TEXAS, the City of La Porte is at the heart of where Texas History began. La Porte itself was a major tourist destination in the early 20th Century. Known in many circles as the “Coney Island of the South,” La Porte was a regular stop on the Moonlight Express train that ran from Houston to the Train Depot, which is now the Old Sylvan Beach Depot Museum. You can learn more about the history of La Porte by watching the video “Tell Us Your Story,” on the City’s website

The Spirit of Modernism: The John R. Eckel, Jr. Foundation Gift to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
Sat, 2011-08-20 - Sun, 2012-07-29
Sat, 2011-08-20 - Sun, 2012-07-29
The Spirit of Modernism pays tribute to the entrepreneurial spirit of businessman and art collector John R. Eckel, Jr. The friendship between John Eckel and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, lasted only five years before his untimely death in 2009. His art collection, now known as the John R. Eckel, Jr. Foundation Gift, lives on at the MFAH as an enduring legacy comprising 75 examples of Modernist American painting and sculpture, photography, and contemporary arts and design. This exhibition highlights the gifts in two locations on the museum’s campus: the Beck Building (Hevrdejs Gallery) and the Law Building (Alice Pratt Brown Gallery and Garden).
The John R. Eckel, Jr. Foundation Gift strengthens the MFAH collections across several curatorial departments and sheds light on Eckel’s vision as an astute collector and generous benefactor. Among the major works on view in this show are Ralston Crawford's buoyant painting Red Barge No. 1; Shiro Kuramata's steel, mesh, and chrome chair How High the Moon; and Harry Bertoia’s gilded bronze sculpture Untitled (Multi-Plane Construction), measuring over 10 feet high.
Shifting Paradigms in Contemporary Ceramics: The Garth Clark and Mark Del Vecchio Collection
Sun, 2012-03-04 - Sun, 2012-06-03
Sun, 2012-03-04 - Sun, 2012-06-03
New York-based scholars and gallerists Garth Clark and Mark Del Vecchio have been leaders in the ceramics field for three decades, assembling one of the most important private collections of contemporary ceramics in the world. In 2007, the MFAH acquired the Garth Clark and Mark Del Vecchio Collection of some 475 artworks, as well as the accompanying library and artist archive.
Shifting Paradigms presents nearly 200 objects—ceramics and works on paper—from this richly diverse collection, which includes major international figures such as Kenjiro Kawai, Jean-Pierre Laroque, Adrian Saxe, Peter Voulkos, and Beatrice Wood, many of whom are represented in depth, as well as examples by Anthony Caro, Lucio Fontana, Claes Oldenburg, and Grayson Perry.
Utopia/Dystopia: Construction and Destruction in Photography and Collage
Fri, 2012-05-11 - Sun, 2012-06-10
Fri, 2012-05-11 - Sun, 2012-06-10
About the exhibition
Utopia/Dystopia explores artists’ use of photography to project a political, social, or cultural state of utopia or dystopia. Ranging in date from the late 19th century to the present, these photos, photocollages, photomontages, and moving images—along with photographs of a constructed space or sculptures that incorporate a photograph—have allowed artists to experiment with social, political, and urban construction and imagination. The exhibition draws on works from the collections of the MFAH and Menil Collection in Houston; the Museum of Modern Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; and private collectors.
The timing of Utopia/Dystopia: Construction and Destruction in Photography and Collage celebrates Houston's FotoFest 2012 Biennial (March 16–April 29). An illustrated catalogue, published by the MFAH and distributed by Yale University Press, accompanies the exhibition.

Welcome to Moody Mansion! Restored to its turn of the century splendor, the 28,000 square-foot, four-story structure was completed in 1895. Today, our guests visit 20 rooms on a tour that depicts the home life of a powerful Texas family. The Moodys established one of the great American financial empires. Based on cotton, it grew to include banking, ranching, insurance and hotels. W.L Moody Jr. bought the home from the heirs of the original owners soon after the great hurricane of 1900. Mr. and Mrs. Moody and their four children celebrated the first of more than eighty Christmas seasons in the house in December of that year. The house remained home for Moody family members until 1986. Today, its rooms are filled with the furnishings and personal effects of the family. The philanthropic legacy of the Moody family of Galveston is carried on today by the Moody Foundation and the Mary Moody Northen Endowment. Both charitable foundations are major forces in health care, education, historic preservation, and the arts. The Moody Foundation has developed spectacular Moody Gardens on the west end of the city. History of Embalming maps a chronological path through the ages on the preservation of human remains-from the mysterious rituals of ancient Egypt, to the first techniques used in America during the Civil War and up through the early 20th century.
The exhibit begins at the origin of embalming, where the Egyptians mummified their dead to preserve them for the afterlife. On display are model objects and tools used in the mummification process, as well as a collection of pictorial displays and renderings. History of Embalming also devotes itself to the work of Dr. Thomas Holmes, deemed the "father of American embalming," with a full-scale recreation of his embalming station on the Civil War battlefield. Concluding the show is authentic equipment and instruments dating from the early 1900s, on display as part of an embalming room from the era.

Asia Society Texas Center
Treasures of Asian Art: A Rockefeller Legacy
Sat, 2012-04-14 - Sun, 2012-09-16
Sat, 2012-04-14 - Sun, 2012-09-16
Treasures of Asian Art: A Rockefeller Legacy, an exhibition of 60 works from one of the finest collections of Asian art in the United States, inaugurates Asia Society Texas Center’s new Louisa Stude Sarofim Gallery.
Selected from the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Collection of traditional Asian art of the Asia Society Museum in New York, the exhibition, which opens April 14, 2012, includes outstanding examples of bronze and stone sculpture from South and Southeast Asia and exquisite ceramics from China, Korea and Japan.
Treasures of Asian Art explores these stunning works by placing them in the context of American collecting of Asian art in the post-World War II period, specifically the collecting practice of Asia Society's founder, John D. Rockefeller 3rd, and his wife, Blanchette Hooker Rockefeller.
The son of collectors John D. Rockefeller Jr. and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, John D. Rockefeller 3rd grew up surrounded by his parents’ collection of Chinese and Japanese ceramics, Japanese prints, and Buddhist sculpture. But his tastes and interests in and motivations for collecting Asian art extended beyond those of his parents, in part because of his experiences serving on the post-World War II peace mission to Japan led by John Foster Dulles.
Lee Ufan: Relatum – signal
Sat, 2012-04-14 - Sat, 2014-05-31
Sat, 2012-04-14 - Sat, 2014-05-31
Korean artist Lee Ufan’s Relatum — signal, his first commissioned piece for a public institution in the United States, inaugurates Asia Society Texas Center’s Allen Sculpture Garden. Lee oversaw installation of the 2011 site-specific sculpture on February 29. The work consists of a large stone in juxtaposition with a slab of steel.
“Lee Ufan’s sculptural work engages and tantalizes the imagination,” Texas Center Executive Director Martha Blackwelder said. “He is an important artist, and by commissioning this piece we have underscored our commitment to exhibiting contemporary art of the highest quality.”
Relatum — signal will be unveiled on April 14-15 when the Texas Center opens its doors to the public with a two-day First Look Festival.
A radically innovative artist long admired in Europe and Asia, Lee was not well known in this country until recently. He is often described as a “philosopher-artist,” reflecting his extensive body of theoretical writing and enduring concern for the interplay of self and the world. Born in southern Korea in 1936, he lived through the Japanese occupation and the Korean War. In 1956 he moved to Japan, where he earned a degree in philosophy from Nihon University, Tokyo. During the 1960s and ’70s he emerged as the best-known practitioner of Mono-ha, an antiformalist, materials-based movement that grew out of the artistic experimentation and leftist activism of the era.
Since 1972 Lee has titled all his sculptural work Relatum, a philosophical term that denotes terms, objects or events among which a relation exists. His oeuvre was the subject of a five-decade retrospective that closed in September at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Chris Hedrick: Implied Utility
Sat, 2012-04-14 - Sun, 2012-06-10
Sat, 2012-04-14 - Sun, 2012-06-10
Looking at the work in his show, Implied Utility, it’s hard to believe Chris Hedrick hasn’t been carving wood his whole life—the illusion of his pieces is just so good. Using primarily hand tools in the converted garage of his historic Houston Heights home, Hedrick digs into exotic woods to extract amazingly accurate reproductions of everyday objects. This exhibition focuses on his charismatic portrayals of woodworking tools themselves.
Hacksaws and power drills, hammers and rakes emerge from Hedrick’s capable hands looking just like their hardware-store counterparts, only enhanced with the liveliness of wood grain and the spark of a well-seasoned design sense. But Hedrick isn’t interested in simple verisimilitude; his work is full of wit and irony, forged through both his years of visual play as a graphic designer for the energy industry and his weekends spent on the beach surfing.
Hedrick’s sense of humor is evident in these works; he interrupts their stolid perfection with equally well-rendered interventions—a cloth left dangling on the blade of his hacksaw, a delicate shroud clothing the business end of a hammer, a saw melting into liquid fluidity. Like the Funk artists to whom his work nods, it’s clear from his command of materials that Hedrick takes his craft seriously, but also that he knows serious is only half the battle. Art, like life, shouldn’t be caught up in so many rules—it’s funny, messy, absurd and more than a little irreverent.
