In 1836, President Sam Houston approved the first national flag of the Republic of Texas. It was similar in design to today’s state flag with the exception that the Lone Star was golden instead of the white star in the modern design. In 1839, the configuration was changed to that of the current flag. It is believed that the original flag was designed in the Conroe area, just north of Houston, most likely by Peter Krag. In 1879, the Legislature repealed all laws not expressly continued in the Revised Statutes adopted in that year. Thus, until enactment of the Flag Act of 1933, Texas was without an official state flag. That year the flag colors were stipulated to be "Old Glory Red" and "Old Glory Blue" – the same found in the flag of the United States. The color red signifies bravery, white means purity and blue stands for loyalty.
